Ajith Kumar who is popularly known as `Thala`, is one of the most acclaimed Indian film actors who predominantly works in the South Indian film industry. Having more than three decades of career span, Ajith never failed to impress the film audience. He prefers scripts that are versatile and has delivered many blockbusters in the Tamil film industry. Besides his interest in acting, he also loves speed and is very much passionate about car racing. He has also participated in the British Formula 3 season and was also ranked as the third-best driver in India.

Ajith Kumar’s Early Life:

Ajith Kumar was born on the 1st of May, 1971, in Hyderabad, India to Mohini Kumar and P. Subramaniam. He has two brothers, Anoop Kumar who is a stockbroker in New York, and Anil Kumar, who works in IT in Seattle. He also has two twin sisters who passed away at a very young age.  Ajith wasn’t interested in studies and dropped out of Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School in 1986 before completing his higher secondary. He also worked as a two-wheeler auto mechanic and was always interested in racing.

Ajith Kumar’s Film Career:


Ajith Kumar ventured into the film industry by playing a small role as a school student in the film titled ‘En Veedu En Kanavar’ (1990). After a gap of three years, he was cast in a Telugu- film Prema Pusthakam (1993).

Ajith made his debut film in the Tamil film industry in the year 1993 with the film titled Amaravathi. It is a romantic-dram film directed by Selva. The film starring newcomers Ajith and Sanghavi in the lead roles became a super hit at the box office with positive reviews from critics to the performance of the lead cast.

With his debut film becoming a super hit at the box office, he then featured in a series of successful films like Paasamalargal (1994), Pavithra (1994), and Aasai (1995). His films Pavithra and Aasai did a very good business at the box office.

Ajith Kumar’s ‘Vaanmathi’ (1995):


In the year 1995, Ajitg was cast in a massive hit film titled ‘Vaanmathi’ directed by Agathiyan. The Tamil romantic drama co-starring Swathi was based on the life of the erstwhile Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha, and her relationship with her niece, Deepa Jayakumar. Upon its release, the film became a massive hit at the box office and had a theoretical run of more than 175 days across several theatres in Tamil Nadu.

Ajith Kumar’s ‘Vaali’ (1999):

In the year 1999, Ajith was cast in an S.J. Surya directorial thriller film titled ‘Vaali’. The film co-starring Simran, Jyothika, and Vivek became a major critical and commercial blockbuster at the box office. The film sees Ajith playing a dual role that of deaf and dumb characters was critically praised. His stellar performance in the film won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil.

Ajith Kumar’s ‘Poovellam Un Vasam’ (2001):


In the year 2001, he starred in ‘Poovellam Un Vasam’ which was directed by Ezhil and co-starring Jyothika. The film did good business at the box office and had a 100 days theoretical run in different centers. The film earned him his second Filmfare Award nomination.

In the same year, he made his debut in Bollywood in the Indian epic historical drama Asoka.

Ajith Kumar’s ‘Villain’ (2002):

In the year 2002, Ajith was a part of another successful film titled ‘Villain’ directed by K.S. Ravikumar. The film co-starring Meena and Kiran Rathod had seen Ajith playing a dual role as a bus conductor and a handicapped man. In 2006, he again collaborated with director K.S. Ravikumar for a film titled ‘Varalaru’ which earned him his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil.

He then starred in a series of successful films like the thriller film Billa (2007), Mankatha (2011), Billa II (2012), Arrambam (2013), Veeram (2014), and Yennai Arindhal (2015), Vivegam (2017),. Nerkonda Paarvai (2019).

His next film ‘Valimai’ is scheduled for release on 24th February 2022.

Ajith Kumar met the love of his life, Shalini Kumar on the sets of Amarkalam in 1999. The duo tied the knot in April 2000 in Chennai. The couple is blessed with two children, a daughter named Anoushka who was born in January 2008, and a son named Aadvik who was born in March 2015.
