Knowledge, Origins, History, and Inventors of Dance

Dance is rhythmic movement to music. Dancing has been around for thousands of years. Cultural, religious, and amusing dances enable individuals express themselves and their traditions via their bodies, bringing people together.

Origins of Dance

Historians have traced some 9,000-year-old dances to India. Dance has been around for thousands of years and likely in cultures worldwide. Indian cave paintings show people dancing with others who play instruments. Ancient India, Greece, Rome, and China, where civilizations and art flourished, inspired some modern dances. Many of these cultures used dance to celebrate, entertain, and worship.

Specific old and younger dances have more specific origins, such as the salsa, which was established in Cuba in the late nineteenth century. Meanwhile, the tango originated in Argentina and is influenced by African and European music.

Dancers began performing for rich Europeans in the mid-1400s, making it a profession. King Louis XIV built the first ballet company and theatre in Paris in the mid-1600s, followed by Russia. Ballet became a global entertainment staple without affluent contributors. Ballerinas took over the sport from male dancers and have kept it going.

Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam, or Tamil Nadu classical dance, is a significant type of Indian classical dance. It is one of the eight well recognised Indian classical dance genres that portrays South Indian religious themes and spiritual beliefs, notably those of Shaivism and Hinduism in general.

The ancient Tamil epic Silappatikaram contains a description of Bharatanatyam from the 2nd century CE, and temple sculptures from the 6th to 9th centuries CE indicate it was a highly perfected performing art by the mid-1st millennium CE. Bharatanatyam is India’s oldest classical dance form. Tamil Nadu’s state dance form is Bharatanatyam.

Types of dances around the world

Each dancing style has its unique moves, clothing, and postures. Dance class and competition etiquette has numerous restrictions, but dancing does not. Dancers should wear the right shoes for their kind of dance (tap shoes for tap dancing, ballet shoes for ballet dance, etc.) and a suitable attire for the competition. Since dance is an original art form, dancers should not take routines from others without permission.

Who Invented Dance

Because of the ancient origins of dance, we cannot credit its invention to a single person or group. The cave paintings discovered in India give no clues to the creation of dance or how far back the practise goes, and it is probable that other cultures who did not make cave paintings had their own dances.

Due to their vast popularity and evolution, contemporary dances are hard to attribute to one person. We usually assign dance genres to nations, states, or places where they became popular. We don’t know who invented breakdancing in Brooklyn in the 1970s or the can-can in Paris in the 1830s. Most dances are formed gradually by numerous persons.
