Mammootty – The Incredible Journey of Kerala’s Biggest Superstar

Mammootty is one of the finest and the most celebrated South Indian film actors who predominantly work in the Malayalam film industry. His original name is Muhammad Kutty Ismail Paniparambil. With a career spanning over three decades, he’s one of the key pillars of the Malayalam film industry. He acted in as many as over 400 films and is still giving a tough competition to the new generation actors with his mesmerizing performances. Prior to stepping into the film industry, he has chosen law as a profession.

Mammootty Personal Life

Mammootty was born on September 07, 1953, in the small village of Chempu, Vaikom, Kerala, India. He completed his secondary education at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam and then he perused a degree in law from the Ernakulam Government Law College. When he was studying at the Maharaja’s College, Mammootty signed up for his debut film ‘Anubhavangal Paalichakal’ back in the year 1971. This film was penned by M. T. Vasudevan Nair and is directed by no other than K. G. George who played a prominent role in strengthening Mammootty’s film career. He made his debut in the lead role with the film ‘Thrishna’ directed by I.V.Sasi.

After working in many films, he got recognition for his brilliant acting skills after working in films like Vilkanundu Swapnangal, Mela, and Yavanika. When it comes to acting, he’s a genius or let’s say a naturally talented actor who is capable of playing any character with ease. His acting skills suit films of all genres and he slowly gained popularity by acting in films of leading directors like M. T. Vasudevan Nair, K.G. George, Padmarajan, P.N. Menon, and Bharathan.

Mammootty established himself as a lead actor in the Malayalam film industry by working in multiple successful 1980s. After playing the role of prominent characters in many films he got his first major breakthrough with the 1987 film ‘New Delhi’. This film was successful both commercially and critically and it helped in garnering a huge craze and fan following for Mammotty.  He also acted in Tamil and Telugu films and has worked under the direction of many legendary film directors like K. Balachander (Azhagan), Mani Ratnam, and others.

Keeping his popularity in view, most of his films would get dubbed and released across the Tamil and Telugu-speaking states.

Mammootty’s Awards Collection

In response to his significant contribution in the field of arts, Mammootty was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in the year 1998. In a career spanning over three decades, he has won many awards including 3 National Film Awards for Best Actor, 7 Kerala State Film Awards, and 13 Filmfare Awards South.

He has also received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Kerala in January 2010 and from the University of Calicut in December 2010.

Mammootty’s Family & Relations

Mammootty was married his wife Sulfath in 1979. They have two children, Surumi and Dulquer Salmaan. He also has a younger brother Ibrahimkutty who is also into acting. Ibrahimkutty’s son Maqbool Salmaan is also a film actor.
