Avatar 2 grossed over $2.02 billion worldwide, surpassing Cameron’s own Avatar (2009), which took approximately 45 days to achieve the same mark upon its first release. The sequel is also the first film to accomplish the milestone in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period.

According to the trade website sacnilk, Avatar: The Way of Water has made around $598 million in its local market, North America, and approximately $1.43 billion in its international market. It is also the highest-earning picture ever on IMAX, collecting $228 million only from IMAX.

Way of Water is still the sixth highest-grossing picture of all time, with the Na’vi poised to overtake Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. When that occurs later this week, the epic sci-fi adventure will become the fourth most-watched film of all time, giving Cameron three of the top four spots.

Avatar: The Way of Water has also made $227 million in IMAX, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the second highest earning film in the format’s history.

This sixth weekend witnessed a 38% dip internationally, bringing in an additional $56.3M. Due to the release of multiple movies during the Lunar New Year (see below), Avatar 2 had a 56% dip in China, although it still grossed $229.7M, making it the highest earning studio picture of the epidemic period in the country, surpassing the initial release of the first Avatar.
