Martin Scorsese, happy 80th birthday! Martin Scorsese, born Martin Marcantonio Luciano Scorsese on November 17, 1942 in Queens, New York, USA, is an American director known for his caustic, frequently violent depictions of American culture.

Scorsese made ambitious, audacious, magnificent work in the 1970s. Even his best renowned films are challenging, emotional dramas with little commercial success. Scorsese is a cult director who works with enormous budgets and Hollywood’s top actors. In terms of artistry, he was possibly the most prominent American director of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Who’s That Knocking at My Door (1967) was Scorsese’s debut theatrical film. Harvey Keitel played Scorsese’s alter ego, a streetwise but sensitive Italian American Catholic whose girlfriend was raped. Scorsese was given the role of assistant director and supervising editor on Woodstock (1970), which turned 100 hours of raw footage of the 1969 rock event into a 3-hour film that won an Oscar for best documentary.
