It only took “Avatar: The Way of Water” 14 days to break the one billion dollar milestone at the worldwide box office, according to a report published by the entertainment news and information website Variety, which is located in the United States. With its phenomenal run in theatres, the second instalment of the ‘Avatar’ franchise has caused cash registers all around the globe to start ringing.
World box office receipts still have not recovered from the pandemic, and in fact, the disease is on the rise again in key nations like China. There are no plans to release the sequel in Russia, which helped bring in an additional 116 million dollars for the original picture.
The movie directed by James Cameron has broken the record for the fastest time to reach this coveted milestone, surpassing all previous movies that were released in the year 2022. Only three movies this year made more than $1 billion at the box office, according to Variety. Top Gun: Maverick (which took 31 days) and Jurassic World: Dominion (which took almost four months), join the ‘Avatar’ sequel on the list.
According to Variety, China was the highest-grossing nation for ‘Avatar 2’ outside of North America, with USD 100.5 million, followed by Korea (USD 53 million), France (USD 52.3 million), India (USD 37 million), and Germany (USD 35.7 million).
However, according to Variety, there are a number of reasons why the success of the first movie will be tough to equal that of the sequel. The original movie grossed a total of USD 2.97 billion throughout the world, making it the highest-grossing film in the history of motion pictures.
Cameron has said that a third picture will most likely be ready for its 2024 release date, regardless of how well The Way of Water fares at the box office, since it has already been filmed. The success of Avatar 2 and 3 will have a direct bearing on whether or not a fourth and fifth movies are ever considered for production.
